Title: Gambling among older adults Author: Iwona Makowska, Urszula Libera, Iwona K?oszewska [opinion article, in polish]
Background. Gambling is a popular activity among older adults, especially in western countries, but gambling research has not focused on elderly individuals. Although most gambling is a social activity, it also could have health implications for older adults.
Material and methods. The aim of the paper is a review of current literature about gambling among persons over 60 years.
Results. The present study preset data evaluating the prevalence of the gambling in the elderly, describing the personality traits and socioepidemiological status of pathological gamblers, and pointing out the side effects occurring in this group of people.
Conclusions. Pathological gambling is an increasing public health concern, but very little is know about this disorder in older adults. Though some results suggest that casino gambling is not a major threat to the elderly it is noted that more extensive research need to be done to assess the individual and social costs and benefits.
