Title: Quetiapine – the mechanism of action and pharmacokinetics in clinical practice Author: Patryk Piotrowski, Andrzej Kiejna [opinion article, in polish]
The aim of the article is a presentation of the mechanism of action and pharmacokinetics of a second-generation antipsychotic – quetiapine. Basing on the literature in natural sciences the affinities for the clinically most important receptors have been shown. The pathomechanism of drug-induced extrapyramidal symptoms and unique mode of interaction between subgroup D2 of dopaminergic receptors of the chemical have been depicted. Reffering to papers in biochemistry, biophysics and physiology the authors elucidate the clinically not significant molecular mechanisms of the drug’s influence on heart muscle. The metabolism of quetiapine as well as potential drug-to-drug interactions connected to psychiatric treatment in predominantly older age have been considered.
Key words: quetiapine, receptor mechanisms, pharmacokinetics, psychogeriatics
